Cubley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Cubley. The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's what many modern diesels near Cubley and Spring Vale run, with diesel feeding the motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Many of cars have a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what cap to use. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cubley: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Mortimer Road, or heading home in the car park outside Cubley Hall.

Unfamiliar motors come second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on. The Green or the heart of Cubley: it takes the same few seconds in both.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Cubley forecourt or a driveway out in Bridge End, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show which belongs in each inlet right there.
  • Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.
  • The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Penistone's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across South Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Mortimer Heights.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Leave out stage five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cubley?

Short order, then. Top of that: your motor stays off. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Cecil Penney Ltd, the Texaco or anywhere else. If you are on your own drive in Cubley, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. The next junction means the place to leave if you are on the M1, under 10 miles from Cubley. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Cubley.

When our technicians get there in Cubley, what happens?

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Penistone Family Hub, or by Penistone St John's Voluntary Aided Primary School. What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the replies set the work and quote. During the call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of that washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take about half an hour after we are there. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
