AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cymmer: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Usually, when the engine has not run, it is drained and fully purged where your vehicle sits around Cymmer. Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that is how many newer diesels near Cymmer and Blaencaerau carry, with diesel for your motor. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler on each tank. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together behind one flap. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Cymmer?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Brytwn Road, perhaps outside the pub in the village on the way home after work.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Cymmer or out in Croeserw.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Cymmer

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Caerau or a forecourt around Cymmer, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.
  • The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.
  • The handbook shows where it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Maesteg.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Neath Port Talbot that is.

  • Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and not in a rush by Station Road at the roadside.
  • Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.
  • The two behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side stays closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop. Step five is out.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cymmer?

Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things begins. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Oils for Wales, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car away if you ask. If you are on your own drive in Cymmer, leave it where it stands.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The next exit means the place to leave if you are on the M4, under 10 miles from Cymmer. A short hop across Cymmer is a smaller job than a run towards Swansea, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

Cymmer: what occurs when our engineers turn up

Outside the local primary school, near Afan Valley Swimming Pool or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Those replies determine this work and our price, so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run. You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it matters more. Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed. Your engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take roughly half an hour once we are there. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
