AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Dalry: What Now?

All of it hinges on one fact: if your engine has been run since the AdBlue was added — more than anything else. Anywhere the car is — Roseburn, Dalry — don't run an engine that has not been started yet. Leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103; it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Dalry. Where the engine has been run, stop safely straight away, then turn the car off. It's a bigger job, yet stage one does not change.

Anywhere in City of Edinburgh it took place, one of the cases below fits yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Dalry forecourt

Only at this point, bottle yet in hand, you realise that the cap you took off was the wrong one, right at the pump. Anywhere around Dalry, then — JET, Sainsbury's, or somewhere else close by.

Meaning? Finding out here is the best it can be. Still in the tank, and no fuel drawn onwards: that's where the AdBlue sits.

Next: resist the temptation to start it only to move away from the petrol pump. Have the staff to lend a hand rolling it to a space, hold on to the bottle, then ring us right there. Stuck beside the pump? Our explosion-proof equipment keeps a busy forecourt safe, and so it can be drained where it is.

Dalry, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

On your dash, a warning had been lit all week. Picked up a bottle, tipped it in outside the house, binned the empty — and only then checked the cap again, after the fact. Right off Dalry Road is no different from anywhere.

Meaning? As long as the vehicle has not moved since, it's second to the forecourt case. Being unable to blend, AdBlue settles to the base in the tank and stays. A night standing changes nothing.

Next: keys indoors, so nobody takes your car anywhere first thing. Then, phone. In North Merchiston or right here in Dalry, the draining is done at your driveway. Night-time drains beside a house are no problem: the pumps are quiet.

Dalry: set off with AdBlue in a diesel?

A short way beyond filling up, the motor started playing up: rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash. It might have been heading for Edinburgh, under 3 miles away, or simply down Murieston Crescent Lane.

The upshot: your system has pulled AdBlue through by now. The high-pressure pump and every injector see it as well on a longer trip, after your filter and pipework have had it. Each restart, like every mile, pushes it on.

Next: pick a safe spot, pull in, then turn your engine off. Service stations farther along can wait: from the M8, under 5 miles out of Dalry, take the next junction. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear on its own. Call, and say what distance the car was driven.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

A week ago, the car was new to you. Unbeknown to you, the AdBlue and diesel inlets are side by side here — unlike your own car, which has no AdBlue or keeps it elsewhere. Any driver, anywhere in City of Edinburgh, might do the same.

Meaning? Whatever applies above counts too — run or not — and one further stage. Plenty of hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on the car.

Sorting it before the van arrives is quicker, so phone the rental company or your fleet manager, and then us. Leave it switched off while the reply arrives, even if you're parked at Haymarket or close to Ewan Williamson.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank in Dalry?

At times, "I think so" is the most anyone can truthfully say. A slight ammonia-like smell hangs near the filler, the bottle feels too light, and which cap came off is hard to recall. Maybe it happened in a hurry at the school gates at the local primary school, or on a friend's drive in Gorgie.

The upshot: the motor isn't harmed by some AdBlue splashed on the filler. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. If there is AdBlue in your tank, starting the vehicle will suck it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

Assume it got in, and don't turn your key. Ring and give the details: we'd sooner confirm a clean tank than empty one after your motor has been run.

The common ground in every Dalry AdBlue drain

No matter the situation, one opening is used. Our technicians come to the car, whether it is at a forecourt, a drive, the car park at Bensons Bar or a side street near Saint Martin of Tours Episcopal Church, and ask three things: what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run. On the phone, before anything else, you are told the quote, and those answers shape the job too.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Not started? In that case roughly half an hour on site covers most jobs.

Our engineers fire it up at the end. With fresh diesel in, it runs while our technicians confirm it's running properly, and then we leave. We do the whole job where the car is, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been spotted early. Nothing is taken upfront, settlement is made on the day, and you get what your insurer wants: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

Fountainbridge and Coates have the identical vans as Dalry, a residential suburb, along with further towns throughout EH postcodes. The location is clearest from a postcode beginning EH11 2.

Whether the car is on a lay-by on the way to Dalry Community Park or in a car park in the middle of Dalry, it does not need to shift. The van empties it where it stands. Ring and ask rather than guess when you're close to The Space, near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down.
