Darlington: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Darlington. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers
Diesel feeds the engine — yet plenty of current diesels seen around Darlington and Albert Hill carry another fluid as well. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, week in, week out. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. That gap is where the error lives.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Darlington?
It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
On a driveway off Houndgate before work, or in the car park at O'Carroll's on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.
Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.
Nothing stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Darlington or out in Bank Top.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Be it a Darlington forecourt or a drive out in Eastbourne, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
- On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Durham that is.
- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Feethams.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.
- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there. Skip stage five altogether.
Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Darlington?
The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor. Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.
The staff at Sainsbury's, Esso or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear when you ask. On your own drive around Darlington? So the car remains where it is.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. Darlington sits under 3 miles from the A66(M); there, take the first junction. A short hop across Darlington is a smaller job than a run towards Durham, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.
What occurs when our technicians get there around Darlington
Outside St Augustine's Catholic Primary School, close to Resurgence or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it. Those answers determine this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run. On the call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.
The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol. A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed. After that we start it and make sure it runs correctly before we go.
Unrun cars usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
