AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dawsholm? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. The harm begins once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. In Dawsholm, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Dawsholm: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Take your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we can know.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting G20 0, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short way up Dalsholm Road.
  • Draining that tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

The staff working at any Dawsholm filling station — the Shell included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. On your own drive, don't move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very place the pickup sucks from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Temple last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow passages; and, since it attacks some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting around Dawsholm. Only inside the tank, it stays stable. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running past them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Dawsholm

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Morrisons, and this problem is diluted fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left in your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Anniesland or the middle of Dawsholm.

As with petrol, there is good news. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside your tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Glasgow City.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Dawsholm

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. A bottle bought when driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed. Near Temple Road, someone tips a container in at home in the evening. Or a driver new to that flap refills the car in dim light, stopped in the car park by Lock 27.

Hired cars, brand-new motors, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it the most. Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Dawsholm or the rest of Glasgow City you are.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dawsholm?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any might show up, maybe part way across Dawsholm or returning from Dawsholm Park Local Nature Reserve. When safe, stop and switch everything off — without restarting to see. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Dawsholm lies under 3 miles from the M8; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Hopping across Dawsholm to the car park by Church of the Immaculate Conception is one thing; driving towards Glasgow, under 5 miles away, is something else, since every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after your engine has been running. When it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Dawsholm: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that is a street beside Martyr's Memorial Pillar, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Dawsholm, and our van comes to it. The job depends on three replies, which we ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the amount, and if your motor has turned over.

Next, draining your tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your car. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, if your engine hasn't run. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the last step. Whether it is a parking bay at Kelvindale or a driveway in Dawsholm, that is where we fire it up and you set off. It's checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

Dawsholm: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat price could be honest, because every job differs. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Maryhill Parish Church.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus if it ran: each Dawsholm call opens with exactly that, ahead of any quote, not after. With those replies, a range narrows to one fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
