Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Deep Pit

Keep your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. A drain and a full flush, done right where your car stands in Deep Pit, is usually what it needs if caught before the engine runs. Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the engine — but many modern diesels seen round Deep Pit and The Manor carry a second fluid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Diesel goes in on each filling station call-out, again and again. Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs. That gap is where the slip lives.

Deep Pit: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Spring Lane, perhaps at The Manor Castle on the way home that evening.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it. Arbourthorne or the heart of Deep Pit: it is the same few seconds in both.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Deep Pit

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt around Deep Pit or a drive over in Elm Tree Hill. Seconds, that's all.

  • Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.
  • On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Sheffield? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across South Yorkshire that is.

  • Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Strouts Way.
  • Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.
  • Both under one flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.
  • Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using the own spout.
  • Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Step five stays off limits.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Deep Pit?

Do not start your motor: that's how the short order of things begins. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — City Road Service Station, Asda or any other — the staff will usually help push your car away, if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Deep Pit.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Come off the M1 — under 5 miles out of Deep Pit — at the next junction. Mileage counts — a quick hop across Deep Pit makes a smaller job than driving under 3 miles to Sheffield — so tell us about how far it went.

When our engineers turn up around Deep Pit, what takes place?

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Norfolk Community Primary School, near The Beacon or on your own drive. Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our technicians ask. No one heads out before you've heard our price by phone.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after the tank is emptied. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Once your filter has been flushed — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car is tested. We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
