Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven around Denholme Edge and Erlings hold a second liquid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler on each tank. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly. Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what filler to use. It is in that gap that the slip lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Denholme Edge: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Ogden Lane before work, or in the car park outside The New Inn on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it. Denholme or the middle of Denholme Edge: it takes the same few seconds either way.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Denholme Edge forecourt or a driveway over in Denholme Clough, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

  • Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the flap and look for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in each filler right there.
  • The handbook shows which it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bingley.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.

  • Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Ogden Crescent.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Finish once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using the built-in spout.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Skip step five altogether.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Denholme Edge?

Short list, then. Top of it: the engine stays off. Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will normally help roll the car away, if you ask. If you are on your own drive in Denholme Edge, leave the car where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. Denholme Edge sits under 10 miles from the M606; on it, take the first exit. Distance counts — a short hop across Denholme Edge is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Bradford — so say about how far it went.

When our technicians arrive around Denholme Edge, what happens?

The van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Denholme Shared Church, or outside Denholme Primary School. Both the work and the price rest on three answers — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask. No one sets off until you have had our quote by phone.

Then your tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
