Deptford: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Around Deptford, finding it before your motor runs normally means a drain and a full flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.
AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank
Many newer diesels in Bishopwearmouth, as well as Deptford, run on two liquids; the motor gets just your diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.
Every tank has a filler of its own. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, again and again. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly. That gap is where the mistake lives.
Deptford: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens
Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.
On a driveway off Deptford Terrace before work, or in the car park outside The Saltgrass on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.
New-to-you motors come second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.
Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it. Whether it occurs in Ayres Quay or the middle of Deptford, it is the same few seconds.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Millfield or a forecourt in Deptford.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.
- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside St Peters.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank
On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Tyne and Wear — a simple routine to use.
- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Hanover Place.
- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read it.
- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Shut the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel cap remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.
Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Never go on to step five.
Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Deptford already?
Brief order, then. First: the motor remains off. Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.
Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Asda, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else. Your own drive in Deptford is where it should stay.
Already started? Stop when it is safe, then turn off. Deptford sits under 10 miles from the A194(M); there, take the next junction. Mileage counts — a short hop across Deptford is a smaller job than driving under 3 miles to Sunderland — so tell us about how far it went.
When our engineers get there around Deptford, what takes place?
Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Men of Steel, or by Grange Park Primary School. Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the answers decide the work and the quote. On the call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of anything else.
Then your tank is emptied and the system purged thoroughly. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Before we leave, we fire it up and make sure that it is running properly.
If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
