AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ditchfield? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition as well. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully cleaned where the vehicle stands in Ditchfield. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Ditchfield, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

  • So nobody can switch your ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Give us a postcode starting HP14 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.
  • Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Even a short way down Church Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Moving your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Ditchfield forecourt you're on, the Texaco or any other. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. From a separate reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, treating what the motor emits. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel. The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Moor End overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle sitting around Ditchfield. Just inside the tank, it stays stable. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Asda, and the problem is diluted fuel. Blended through the diesel and left unused, it is no threat at that stage; running your engine does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Wheeler End or the heart of Ditchfield equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Buckinghamshire the car has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Ditchfield?

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Lane End Primary School. After work, a container goes in on a drive near Clinkard Place. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Grouse & Ale, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere in Ditchfield or the remainder of Buckinghamshire you happen to be.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ditchfield?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Bolter End Common or halfway across Ditchfield. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M40, under a mile from Ditchfield, by the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Ditchfield to the car park by Holy Trinity is a very different job from a run towards Oxford, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Noticed early, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Ditchfield

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Ditchfield: a side street near St John the Evangelist, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if your motor has run, since those replies determine the work.

Then the tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since what remains will not flush out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking bay outside High Wycombe or a driveway around Ditchfield, that is where our engineers start it and you head off. Our technicians make sure it runs properly on clean diesel before we go. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Ditchfield and Buckinghamshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Lane End, Moor Common and Bolter End are among the towns around Ditchfield that the same teams reach, along with much of Buckinghamshire further out, throughout the HP postcode area. Phone and ask rather than guess if you're close to a county line, or somewhere tricky to explain.

Anywhere the vehicle stands — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — we empty it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Ditchfield, a small village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Ditchfield?

There is no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same. The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Frieth Village Hall.

Ahead of any quote, never after, each call from Ditchfield opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if the engine ran. Those replies narrow a range right down to one number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
