AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Dodworth Bottom and Stainborough carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side behind one flap. Diesel goes in on each filling station visit, again and again. The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in that gap that the slip lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Dodworth Bottom

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Saville Hall Lane, or outside Thornely Arms on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a strange car.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on. It's seconds, whether out in Dodworth Green or right in the centre of Dodworth Bottom.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Dodworth Bottom forecourt or a driveway over in Keresforth Hill, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.
  • Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Open the flap and look for a label — many cars show what goes in which filler just there.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Dodworth? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Stainborough Road.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Dodworth Bottom?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Jet, the Gulf or somewhere else. At home in Dodworth Bottom? Then the vehicle stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. The next junction means the place to come off when you're on the M1, under a mile from Dodworth Bottom. Distance counts — a quick hop across Dodworth Bottom makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Wakefield — so say roughly how far it went.

When we get there around Dodworth Bottom, what takes place?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Keresforth Primary School, near Wharncliffe Community Centre or on your own driveway. Those answers settle the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run. You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then that tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Before we leave, our engineers start the car and check that it's running smoothly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
