AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Drighlington: What Now?

One thing counts above all once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and it is if your motor has been started afterwards. Over in Greystone or right in Drighlington, an unstarted engine must stay that way. Usually that is draining and thoroughly rinsing it on the spot around Drighlington — so keep your ignition and motor off then call 0333 366 0103. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The job is bigger, but the first stage is the same.

At the petrol pump around Drighlington: AdBlue in a diesel

Just now, bottle still in your hand, you realise that the cap you took off was the wrong one, right at the petrol pump. It might be the Shell, or the another forecourt nearby, or another forecourt in Drighlington.

What it means: this is the ideal place to find out. Still inside your tank, with nothing drawn through: that is where the AdBlue sits.

Do this: stay out of the driver's seat, even if the pump wants freeing. Three jobs: a push into a bay with the staff assisting, the receipt kept, and a call to us from where you stand. If it cannot be moved, it can be cleared at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt.

Drighlington, at home: AdBlue in the diesel tank

For days the dashboard had been warning you. A bottle from the garage, emptied in at the drive — and it was just by the bin that the cap caught your eye. Driveways close to Bradford Road get it as much as anywhere.

Meaning? Provided the vehicle has not moved since, it is close to the pump case. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Put the keys in the house overnight — otherwise someone may take it away first thing — then phone us. Our engineers drain it on your drive, whether that is around Drighlington or out in Nethertown. The equipment works quietly enough that it won't wake the street at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Drighlington

On the road around Drighlington with AdBlue in a diesel

A short way after filling up, your motor started playing up: roughness, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash. Maybe it was on Kingsdale Gardens, perhaps on the way out towards Bradford, under 5 miles away.

In short: the AdBlue has been pulled into the system. Past your filter, along the lines, and — the further the mileage — deeper into the injection pump and every injector. It travels further with every mile covered and every restart.

Your move: pull up somewhere safe, then switch the motor off. On the M62, under a mile from Drighlington, that means the next exit, not the services further on. No test starts: clearing isn't something AdBlue will do. Phone, and say how far your car was driven.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

You've just driven the vehicle for days. On your own vehicle, AdBlue is missing or somewhere else. On this one, the cap is right next to your diesel cap — news to you. It can happen to anyone, anywhere in West Yorkshire.

Put simply: an extra stage on top of the cases above, and those depend on whether it's run. The owner often has to sign off any work, under many hire and fleet agreements.

Next: ring the rental company or your fleet manager first, then us — sorting it before our arrival is quicker. Waiting for a reply at the car park at Morley, or near Drighlington Methodist Church? Keep the car off meanwhile.

Drighlington: unsure whether it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Sometimes the honest answer is "I think so". Lighter, the bottle; a hint of ammonia round your filler; no clear recollection of which cap. Look familiar? Maybe at a friend's drive in Scott Green, or rushing outside Drighlington Primary School on the school run.

The point: your motor isn't harmed by some AdBlue splashed around the filler. Once it is inside the diesel tank, though, that changes. Starting the vehicle will not tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in the tank it will draw it in.

Next: assume it got in, then keep your engine off. Phone and give what you saw: we'd rather confirm a tank free of AdBlue than empty one after your motor has been run.

What each AdBlue drain in Drighlington has in common

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Anywhere your vehicle is — The Spotted Cow's car park, a street beside The Parish Church of Saint Paul Drighlington, a drive, a forecourt — the van gets there and we ask for the fluid, the quantity, plus whether your engine has turned over. Those replies decide the work, and you hear our quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

A thorough flush comes after the drain. With petrol it's standard; with AdBlue it's essential, since deposits build up and certain metals corrode, and none of that washes away unaided. Fresh diesel is put in after your filter is cleaned or changed, and the car is then checked. The majority of unrun vehicles are a half-hour job after the moment our engineers get there.

Our technicians fire it up last. Our test that it runs properly on fresh diesel comes before our technicians head off. Our engineers do the whole job where the vehicle is, and long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early. Paying comes that day, never in advance. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer. It is worth knowing: many insurers include misfuelling cover, so a check of your documents while we travel pays.
