How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dringhouses

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle stands around Dringhouses, is normally all it needs when caught before your engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around Dringhouses and Low Field carry, with diesel for your motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.

Every tank has a filler of its own. Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap. Diesel goes in at every filling station call-out, again and again. Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler to use. The error lives in that gap.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Dringhouses?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Dante Way before work, or in the car park outside Dringhouses Sports and Social Club on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Knavesmire or the middle of Dringhouses: it takes the same few seconds in both.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Holgate or a forecourt around Dringhouses.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles show which goes in each filler just there.
  • Can't see it next to the diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say which.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at York's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere across North Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of North Eastern Terrace.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Don't go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Dringhouses?

Short list, then. Top of it: your engine remains off. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Applegreen, the Tesco or anywhere else. At home in Dringhouses? So your car stays where it is.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off. Dringhouses sits under 15 miles from the A1(M); on it, take the next exit. A short hop across Dringhouses is a smaller job than a run towards York, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

When our technicians arrive in Dringhouses, what occurs?

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Dringhouses Library, or outside Dringhouses Primary School. We ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, because the answers settle this work and our price. You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears out on its own, however long it is left. After the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your car gets tested. Your engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
