Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dropping Well

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the motor off and leave the ignition off. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Dropping Well. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Dropping Well, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and about how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and we can see.
  • Tell us a postcode starting S61 2, or whichever street lies closest, and our van finds you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: the engine remains off.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way up Upper Wortley Road.
  • Emptying your tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

Moving your car off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Dropping Well forecourt you're on, the Texaco or any other. If you are on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it stands.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — entirely unlike fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the very place the intake draws from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Scholes last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through once the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning in Dropping Well makes things worse. Inside that tank only, time costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Dropping Well

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Hill Top or the middle of Dropping Well.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere around South Yorkshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Dropping Well?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Redscope Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. After work, a container goes in on a driveway close to Droppingwell Road. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Dropping Well.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet car, or the other motor of a family with both fuel types — the cars drivers use least. Wherever you are in Dropping Well or the rest of South Yorkshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

Dropping Well: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through your filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Perhaps coming back from Driving Range, or part way across Dropping Well, the engine may run rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Dropping Well lies under a mile from the M1; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so driving for Sheffield, under 5 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Dropping Well to the car park by Morris. Let us know about how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once the motor has been started, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped. If it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Dropping Well?

Anywhere it has stopped around Dropping Well — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Stan — our van travels to your car. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run, since those answers decide this work.

Then the tank is drained where the car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not wash away by itself. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel. You head off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Dropping Well or in a space at Meadowhall. The check before we go is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. Afterwards, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Dropping Well

Each job differs, so not one fixed quote would be fair. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Crow Girl.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Dropping Well opens by asking the same trio — which fluid got in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any quote. Their replies shrink a range down to one figure.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
