Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Drumgelloch

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Drumgelloch. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Drumgelloch: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Take your keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it away.
  • Tell us a postcode starting ML6 7, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
  • Even a short stretch up Motherwell Street is too far to drive the car.
  • Draining your tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

The staff working at any Drumgelloch filling station — the BP included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — quite different from fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Gartlea overnight and has not turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning around Drumgelloch makes it worse. In your tank only, time costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Drumgelloch

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a problem of thin fuel. No damage is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, so thinning it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Petersburn or the heart of Drumgelloch alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around North Lanarkshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Drumgelloch: how it ends up there

Many motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody means it. It usually happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Drumbathie Road. One more version: darkness, a pub car park outside Albert Bar, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Keep it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever around Drumgelloch or the rest of North Lanarkshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Drumgelloch, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. Through your filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Perhaps coming back from Rawyards Park, or part way across Drumgelloch, the engine may go rough, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or stall. No restarting to check: stop when safe, then turn it off. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M8, under 3 miles from Drumgelloch, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

A quick hop across Drumgelloch to the car park by Springfield Community Centre is one matter; heading for Glasgow, under 15 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it is noticed quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Drumgelloch?

A street by St Serf's Roman Catholic Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Drumgelloch, our technicians come to it. The job rests on three answers, which our technicians ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one. What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol. A test of your vehicle comes last, once clean diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if needed, swapped. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the engine hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel. You drive off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Drumgelloch or in a bay by the nearest station. The check before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Drumgelloch

Each job is different, and so no fixed price is honest. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind At Home Centre.

What went in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: every Drumgelloch call begins with exactly that, before any figure, never after. Once they are known, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Our price is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
