AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads about Drybrook and Plump Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Many of cars share a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Drybrook?

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

On a driveway off High Street before work, or in the car park outside Hearts of Oak heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Drybrook or out in Ruardean Hill.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Drybrook

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Steam Mills or a forecourt around Drybrook, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.
  • Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say where.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Lydney, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are around Gloucestershire — a routine to follow.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Whitehill Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using the own spout.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Don't go on to step five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Drybrook?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the engine. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Power or the Murco, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Drybrook.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. On the M50, under 10 miles from Drybrook, that means the next junction. A short hop across Drybrook is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Drybrook: what happens when our technicians turn up

Our van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Memorial Hall (Social Club), or outside Drybrook Primary School. Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those replies set the work and price. That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. After that we start the engine and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

AdBlue drains across Gloucestershire, Drybrook included

Being a village, Drybrook shares its vans surrounding places — Harrow Hill, Nailbridge — right across GL postcodes and the surrounding area around them. Fastest of all: quote a GL17 9 postcode to the van.

Shifting your car isn't necessary. We drain it where it is — a side street near Ruardean Hill Baptist Church, a lay-by on the way to Harechurch Wood, a drive. Tricky to pin down, like the back of Holy Trinity? By a county line? Asking beats guessing, so ring.
