AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dudley? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition as well. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens until your motor sucks it through. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands in Dudley. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Dudley, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it away.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting DY1 1, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine stays off.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance up Stone Street.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Dudley filling station — the Texaco among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. On that drive, the vehicle remains exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. Nothing in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its supply from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits underneath the diesel, which is why a car topped up in Priory yesterday and never switched on remains the simple case, provided nobody turns the key.

Two kinds of harm come from there. It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it's cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. A car left standing in Dudley with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Then there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel. Blended through your diesel and left unused, it is no threat at that stage; running the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it separates again — and the following tankful will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Dudley or out in Blowers Green, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever in West Midlands your car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Dudley

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. Rushing, outside St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Wolverhampton Street. One more version: darkness, the car park outside The Griffin, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are in Dudley or the rest of West Midlands, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Dudley?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, perhaps midway across Dudley or returning from Inhenge Gardens. No restarting to check: pull over once it is safe, then turn everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Dudley sits under 3 miles from the M5; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Dudley to the car park by Ben Boucher (1769-1851) Bench is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has stopped. Lasting damage is very rare when it's caught quickly.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Dudley: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest around Dudley — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by Long Entry Decorative Archways — the van comes to the vehicle. Which fluid went in, about the quantity, and if the motor has been run: we ask first, since those decide the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed the system on new diesel. You head off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Dudley or in a space outside Tipton. It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians head off. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

About Dudley itself

Dudley is a town in the West Midlands, situated on the River Dudley, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential areas. Dudley is located near several notable areas, including Old Dock, Kates Hill, and New Dock, and is close to the city of Wolverhampton. Dudley has a population of approximately 27,879 people.

Dudley and West Midlands: AdBlue drains across the area

The teams that answer AdBlue jobs in Dudley also cover the places round it, Old Dock, Kates Hill and New Dock among them, and most of West Midlands beyond, across the DY postcode area. Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

Anywhere your car sits — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians empty it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Dudley, a riverside town, well.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Dudley: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single price, since the jobs aren't the same. Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind James Forsyth Fountain.

For that in mind, every call from Dudley opens by asking the same trio — what was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before any figure. Once they are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

Our price is quoted on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
