AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Duns? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Duns. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Duns

Do these:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting TD11 3, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is wasted.
  • Even a short way down Murray Street is too far to drive it.
  • Draining the tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

The staff on duty at any Duns forecourt — the Gulf included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very place the pickup draws from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Buxley overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there. Overnight, a car parked in Duns with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only inside the tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Duns

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the JET, and this issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Duns or out in Gavinton, does more harm than nearly any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the simplest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Scottish Borders.

Duns: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts invite it. It mostly takes place at home, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone refills your car. A driver pours the bottle in at home, just off Castle Street, as the day ends. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the car after dark, parked in the car park by Whip and Saddle.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a fleet motor, or the spare motor of a home with one of each fuels — the cars drivers know the least. Wherever around Scottish Borders, Duns included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Duns, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Duns Park or halfway across Duns. No restarting to check: pull over once it is safe, then switch it off. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M8, under 50 miles from Duns, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Duns to the car park by Mercat Cross is one matter; heading towards Edinburgh, under 50 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. If it is noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Duns: what it takes

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Duns: a side street near Wojtek the Bear Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers decide the work, and so first we ask what got in, about the amount, and whether your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is emptied, on the spot. Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or changed if it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. At that point our engineers fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space outside Reston or a drive around Duns. Our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains in Duns and across Scottish Borders

AdBlue call-outs in Duns go to teams that serve the places around it — Wellnage Myre, Cheeklaw plus Clockmill — and much of Scottish Borders further out, across TD postcodes. Guessing won't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers empty it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Duns, a town, well.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Duns

Each job is different, so no single price is fair. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Polish War Memorial.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Duns enquiry opens with precisely that, ahead of any quote, not afterwards. Once they are answered, a range becomes a single firm number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
