Dunstall Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?
Leave your engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Usually, if your engine hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where your car sits in Dunstall Hill. Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers
Diesel goes to your engine — yet many current diesels driven about Dunstall Hill and Springfield hold another fluid as well. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
There is a filler for each tank. Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in that gap that the mistake lives.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dunstall Hill: how it takes place
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Glentworth Gardens, or on the way home in the car park outside The Winning Post.
The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a strange vehicle.
Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Dunstall Hill or out in Whitmore Reans.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Wolverhampton or a forecourt in Dunstall Hill.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.
- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — at Wolverhampton's car park, say — rather than when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
The day the light goes on, anywhere across West Midlands, use this routine.
- Not in a rush on the side of Darley Drive, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.
- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Do not go on to stage five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Dunstall Hill?
Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine. Keep the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump. Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.
Ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Asda or anywhere else. On your own drive around Dunstall Hill? So your car remains put.
When the engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe then switch the car off. On the M54, under 3 miles from Dunstall Hill, that means the next junction. A short hop across Dunstall Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.
Our arrival in Dunstall Hill, and what occurs next
Anywhere the car has stopped, whether outside Dunstall Hill Primary School, near Wulfrun's Well or at home, our van comes to it. We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies determine the work and our quote. No one heads out before you have had the quote over the phone.
The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it matters more. Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed. Your engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers go.
Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run need roughly half an hour after we arrive. Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
