Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dykebar: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Around Dykebar, finding it before the motor turns normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the engine — yet many modern diesels seen round Dykebar and Thornly Park hold a second fluid as well. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Every tank has one filler of its own. Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly. The mistake grows in the gap between them.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Dykebar?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Glenapp Road, or outside Abbey Inn on the way home after work.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it occurs in Lochfield or the middle of Dykebar, it's the same few seconds.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Dykebar forecourt or a driveway out in Charleston, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Hawkhead, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Renfrewshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Finglas Avenue.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there. Don't go on to step five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Dykebar already?

Short order, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Jet or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump. At home in Dykebar? Then the car remains where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. On the M8, under 3 miles from Dykebar, that means the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Dykebar is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards Glasgow, so tell us.

Our arrival around Dykebar, and what takes place next

By the local primary school, near Lylesland Parish Church or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. What fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and quote. During the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out by itself. Hence it counts more. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Next we start it and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need about half an hour once we arrive. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
