AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East Craigend? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off then leave your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. In East Craigend, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in East Craigend: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Pocket your keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so do not bin it away.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting PA8 6, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: your engine remains off.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is wasted.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Barrhill Road.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Ask the attendants to help you move the car off the island if you're on a forecourt around East Craigend, whether it is the Shell or elsewhere. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Rashielee last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; and, since it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight around East Craigend makes things worse. Inside that tank only, time does nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on JET's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the main issue. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it causes none.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of East Craigend or out in Town Centre, costs more than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Renfrewshire your car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around East Craigend

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Millfield Gardens. Otherwise, in dim light by the pub in the village, your car is refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in East Craigend or the rest of Renfrewshire.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around East Craigend?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Rashielee Plantation, perhaps, or midway across East Craigend. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off instead of testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M898, under a mile from East Craigend, by the first junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across East Craigend to the car park by Erskine Parish Church is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's caught quickly.

East Craigend: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street by Erskine Library, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped in East Craigend, our technicians travel to it. The job depends on three replies, which our technicians ask for first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your engine has run.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue will not flush away unaided. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. Not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, by Dalmuir or on a driveway around East Craigend. Our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

East Craigend and Renfrewshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in East Craigend are passed to vans that serve the places around it — West Freeland, Park Mains plus West Craigend — and most of Renfrewshire further out, throughout PA postcodes. If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No moving is needed. In East Craigend, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is drained where it stands, be it on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around East Craigend

Because the jobs vary, a flat price would not be honest. What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Erskine Leisure Centre.

For that reason, every enquiry from East Craigend opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before any quote. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before a van sets off, you hear the price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Check your insurance while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
