AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East Fields? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep the ignition off. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm happens till your engine sucks it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around East Fields, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your motor has been run. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in East Fields

To do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a RG14 7 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: your motor stays off.
  • Switching the key to ignition alone starts the pump going on many diesels. Skip it.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's pointless.
  • Even a short stretch up Stanley Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Beside the road, don't try draining it yourself.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever East Fields forecourt you're on, the Sainsbury's included. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel. The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Speenhamland overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it reaches till it is removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels. A motor left sitting in East Fields with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in East Fields

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the BP. No damage is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so watering it can't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Greenham or the centre of East Fields equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever across Berkshire the car has stopped, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in East Fields?

Many cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one means it. Mostly it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside St Nicolas C.E. Junior School. Near Railway Road, someone pours a bottle in on the drive after work. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Old London Apprentice, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers use the least. Wherever you are around East Fields or the rest of Berkshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in East Fields?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Stroud Green, say, or part way across East Fields. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again. Every start pulls more of that through.

East Fields lies under 5 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across East Fields to the car park by Northway Climbing Centre is a very different job from a run towards Winchester, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has ended up, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. When it's caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in East Fields: what it takes

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a road beside Abstract Bodyworks Newbury, a drive, a layby or a filling station in East Fields, and the van comes to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if the motor has run, since those replies decide this work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol. After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of the vehicle. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. After that we start it and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Newbury Racecourse or a drive in East Fields. We check it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

AdBlue drains around East Fields and across Berkshire

The teams that answer AdBlue call-outs around East Fields also cover the spots about it, Newbury, Ham Marsh and West Fields among them, and most of Berkshire beyond, across the RG postcode area. Phone and ask instead of guessing when you're by a county line, or somewhere awkward to explain.

A van that comes to you suits East Fields, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your car to us, because our technicians empty it there, on a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around East Fields: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight gap behind Newbury Baptist Church.

With that reason, each call from East Fields opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote. When they are answered, a range becomes one fixed number.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
