Eastburn: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. In Eastburn, catching it before the engine turns usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Eastburn and Steeton run, with diesel feeding the engine. AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

There's a filler for every tank. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. The error lives in that gap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Eastburn: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Sun Street, or at The Inn at Eastburn on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip begins, no part stops it. It's seconds, whether out in Eastburn Br or right in the heart of Eastburn.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Cross Hills or a forecourt around Eastburn, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.
  • Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a rental or fleet car — from Steeton & Silsden's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.

  • Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Main Road.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start your car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Eastburn?

Don't start your motor: that's how the short order of things starts. The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — BP, Asda or another — the attendants will normally help roll your car clear, if you ask. If you're on your own drive around Eastburn, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run. On the M65, under 10 miles from Eastburn, that means the next junction. Mileage matters — a short hop across Eastburn makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Bradford — so say about how far it went.

Eastburn: what happens when our engineers arrive

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Steeton Methodist Church, or by Eastburn Primary School. Which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the answers set both work and quote. During the call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The filter cleaned or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle. Before we go, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

AdBlue drains in Eastburn and across West Yorkshire

Eastburn is a village, and the vans that cover it also work the places around it, Junction and Whitley Head among them, across the BD postcode area. A postcode starting BD20 8 gets the van to you fastest.

Shifting the car isn't needed. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near The Hub, a lay-by on the way to Currer Wood, a driveway. Awkward to explain, like the back of Sutton Village Hall? Close to a border? Checking is better than guessing, so phone.
