AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Edgewell? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition too. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump begins pulling it. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully flushed where the car sits in Edgewell. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, Edgewell: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers will know.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a NE42 6 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Do not do these:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's pointless.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance along Tennyson Court.
  • Draining your tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

Moving your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Edgewell forecourt you are on, the Gulf or any other. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. From a dedicated tank it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the intake sucks from. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Eltringham overnight and not started since is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Edgewell makes things worse. In that tank alone, waiting does nothing. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a separate kind of harm.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main issue. Blended through your diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless at that stage; running the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Mickley or the heart of Edgewell alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Northumberland your car is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Edgewell?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. It mostly occurs at home, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside Prudhoe Castle First School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle. Someone tips the container in outside their house, right off Ovington View, as the day ends. Or someone new to that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Halfway House.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new motor, a company motor, or the spare motor in a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles drivers know least. Same slip, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you are around Edgewell or the remainder of Northumberland.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Edgewell?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through the filter, along the lines, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Maybe returning from Edgewell Ave Green, or part way across Edgewell, the motor may run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Leave it off instead of restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the Central Motorway East, under 15 miles from Edgewell, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Edgewell to the car park by Bonnie is a very different job from a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. If it's spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Edgewell: what it takes

The car stays where it is, whether that's a street beside Our Lady & St Cuthbert's, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Edgewell, and the van travels to it. The work depends on three replies, and we get before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. Your system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of the car comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end. At that point our engineers start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Prudhoe or a driveway in Edgewell. The check before our technicians head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Edgewell

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. What changes the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Prudhoe Methodist Church.

Ahead of any quote, not after, every call from Edgewell opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran. Their replies narrow the range down to a single figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. While the van is travelling, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
