AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Edgworth: How It Happens and How to Stop It
Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle stands around Edgworth, is usually what it takes if caught before the motor runs. The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.
AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank
No single fluid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels around Edgworth and Entwistle carry, with diesel feeding the engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.
Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Edgworth
Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.
Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Broadhead Road, or on the way home in the car park at White Horse.
Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.
A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on. It takes seconds, whether in Turton Bottoms or bang in the centre of Edgworth.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Check these first, at a forecourt in Edgworth or a drive out in Edge Fold. A few seconds, that's all.
- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in each inlet right there.
- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Entwistle's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
When the light goes on, wherever around Lancashire, follow this routine.
- Not in a rush on the side of Bury Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly using the built-in spout.
- Close the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start your car.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Never go on to stage five.
AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Edgworth?
What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is taken from.
Ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the BP or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Edgworth.
Already run? Stop when it is sensible, then switch off. Edgworth sits under 5 miles from the M66; there, take the first exit. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Edgworth.
When our engineers turn up in Edgworth, what occurs?
Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it by Turton and Edgworth CofE/Methodist Primary School, beside The Barlow or on your own drive, the van comes to it. What liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because the answers decide the work and price. No one sets off until you've heard our quote by phone.
Your system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is drained. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol. The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car. Then our technicians start it and check it runs smoothly before we go.
Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
