AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Effingham? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition too. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes when your pump begins pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Effingham, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the engine has been run. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Effingham

Do:

  • Pocket the keys, which prevents someone switching the electrics on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it out.
  • Give us a postcode starting KT24 5, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Never do these:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, so leave it off.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Crossways.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Effingham forecourt you are on, the BP or any other. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It does not blend. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its supply from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Polesden Lacey last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. A car left standing in Effingham with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Effingham

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Effingham or out in East Horsley, costs more than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around Surrey the vehicle has stopped.

Effingham: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Mostly it's not the filling station: a driver picks up a container heading home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Lawrence Primary School the refill is rushed. Close to Yew Tree Walk, someone tips a bottle in at home after work. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Queen Stage, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, new motors, fleet motors, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most. Wherever around Surrey, Effingham as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

Effingham: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been pulled through your filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from King George V Playing Fields, say, or part way across Effingham. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M25, under 3 miles from Effingham, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so driving towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Effingham to the car park by Effingham Methodist Church. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is spotted soon.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Effingham

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Effingham: a side street near St Lawrence, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What was put in, roughly the quantity, and if your engine has turned over: our engineers check before all else, since those shape the job.

Then the tank is cleared where the car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't wash away by itself. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, if your motor hasn't run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the last step. You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Effingham or in a bay by Bookham. It is tested on new diesel to make sure it runs properly before we leave. Our technicians do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Effingham?

No flat price would be fair, because each job differs. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Learning Resource Center.

Before a quote, never afterwards, every enquiry from Effingham opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran. Given those replies, the range shrinks to one firm figure.

Our price is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
