Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ellentrees

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Ellentrees. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Ellentrees, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • Take the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting WF6 2, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.
  • Even a short way along Bransdale Close is too far to drive it.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Ellentrees forecourt — the JET included — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Low Common overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. Lines holding AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle sitting in Ellentrees. Only inside that tank, it stays stable. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Ellentrees

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a problem of thin fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting inside your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Normanton or the middle of Ellentrees.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever in West Yorkshire your car has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

Ellentrees: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up when heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets rushed outside Martin Frobisher Infant School, after the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off. Close to Clayton Mews, a driver pours a container in at home after work. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Altofts WMRC, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, brand-new vehicles, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most. Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you are around Ellentrees or the rest of West Yorkshire.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ellentrees?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. The filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may show up, perhaps midway across Ellentrees or coming back from Altofts Community Sports Club. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M62, under a mile from Ellentrees, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

A quick hop across Ellentrees to the car park by Hebron Christian Fellowship is one thing; driving for Wakefield, under 5 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been running. Spotted early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Ellentrees

Wherever it has stopped in Ellentrees — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by Church of St Mary Magdalene — the van comes to the vehicle. What was put in, roughly the quantity, and if the motor has turned over: we check before all else, because those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, on the spot. The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel. After that our engineers fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Normanton or a driveway in Ellentrees. It is tested on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our technicians go. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Ellentrees and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls in Ellentrees also cover the locations round it, Lower Altofts, Ashfield and Altofts among them, and most of West Yorkshire beyond, across the WF postcode area. Ring and check rather than guess if you are by a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

A mobile service suits Ellentrees, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Ellentrees

Every job is different, so no single quote would be honest. Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind War Memorial.

For that in mind, each call from Ellentrees opens with the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, whether it ran — before any quote. With them, the range narrows to a single firm number.

The quote is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Ellentrees: still next to the car?

Not touching the car is, right now, the most useful thing open to you. Ignition off, motor off, keys out. Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if it ran are everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest throughout West Yorkshire, Ellentrees too.
