AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Elm? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Elm. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Elm

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PE14 0, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Begdale Road.
  • By the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Elm forecourt you are on, the Morrisons or any other. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. A vehicle topped up on a drive in Great Boleness Field overnight and not started since is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when your engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. It attacks some metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it's cleared completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny passages. By daybreak, a vehicle sitting in Elm with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's just inside the tank, it doesn't. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Elm

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Michael Wicks Garage and you have a problem of thin fuel. Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside the tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Elm or out in Friday Bridge, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Cambridgeshire the car sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Elm: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two can look identical. No one intends it. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets rushed outside Elm CofE Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were taken off. Near Rose Lane, someone pours a bottle in on that drive after work. Otherwise, in dim light by The Sportsman, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the other vehicle in a family with both fuel types — the cars people use the least. An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Elm or the rest of Cambridgeshire.

Elm: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Elm Play Area, perhaps, or midway across Elm. Once safe, pull over and turn everything off — without restarting to see. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the A1(M), under 25 miles from Elm, by the first junction and park safely, not carrying on.

Hopping across Elm to the car park by Elm War Memorial is one thing; heading towards Ely, under 25 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the motor has been run. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted soon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Elm

Wherever it has stopped around Elm — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street by All Saints (Elm Parish Church) — our van travels to the vehicle. Which fluid got in, about how much, and whether the motor has turned over: we check before all else, since those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is emptied, on the spot. The system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The last step is to prime the system on new diesel. Whether it's a parking bay by March or a driveway in Elm, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off. Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving. Since the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

About Elm itself

Elm is a small village in Cambridgeshire, situated in a low-lying inland area with an elevation of around 9 metres. Elm lies near the villages of Begdale and South Bridge Field, and is approximately 17 miles from the city of Ely. Elm has a population of around 1129 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

AdBlue drains across Elm and Cambridgeshire

Begdale, Colletts Br and South Bridge Field are among the places around Elm that the same vans reach, together with much of Cambridgeshire beyond, over the PE postcode area. If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

A van that comes to you fits Elm, a rural village: you have no need to bring the vehicle to us, since our engineers drain it there, in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Elm?

Since each callouts vary, a flat price would not be honest. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind The Elm Centre.

What went in, how much, plus if the engine ran: each Elm enquiry begins with precisely those, ahead of any figure, not after. Once those are answered, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Check your policy while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

Elm: still beside the car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to leave it. Keys out; motor and ignition off. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Elm or anywhere across Cambridgeshire.
