AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads about Elm Terrace and Lime Terrace carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in at every filling station call-out, week in, week out. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly. It's in the gap that the error happens.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Elm Terrace?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Elm Terrace, or at The Red Alligator on the way home after work.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it. Oak Street or the heart of Elm Terrace: it is the same few seconds in both.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Elm Terrace

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Elm Terrace or a drive over in Gray Street. Seconds, no more.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • Can't see it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bishop Auckland.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning comes on — wherever it is around Durham — a routine to use.

  • Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Wilson Street.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • The two under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Stop once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through its own spout.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Don't carry on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Elm Terrace already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the JET, the Asda or anywhere else. If you're on your own driveway around Elm Terrace, leave the vehicle where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Leave the A1(M) — under 10 miles out of Elm Terrace — at the first exit. About how far did it go? Hopping across Elm Terrace is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles to Durham, and so tell us.

When our technicians turn up around Elm Terrace, what occurs?

Our van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside The Valley Methodist Church, or outside Prince Bishops Community Primary School. Both the work and the price rest on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and if it has run — so we ask. Nobody heads out until you have had our quote by phone.

Then your tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it counts more. Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive. No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
