AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Elmslack? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till your engine sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Elmslack, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Elmslack, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so do not throw it away.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a LA5 0 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: your engine remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, so it's wasted.
  • Even a short distance up Elmslack Court is too far to drive it.
  • By the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

At a forecourt in Elmslack, whether it's the Texaco or another one, ask the staff to help you roll your car clear of the pump. At your own drive, do not move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Waterslack last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it touches until it is cleared completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Elmslack makes things worse. Inside that tank only, waiting does nothing. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel running through them, so the water content damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Elmslack

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP. No harm comes as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Red Bridge or the heart of Elmslack equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever in Lancashire the car has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

Elmslack: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Silverdale St John's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School the refill is hurried. A driver pours the container in at home, right off Cove Road, as the day ends. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park by The Woodlands.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the other car of a family with one of each fuels — the cars people know least. Wherever you're around Elmslack or the remainder of Lancashire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Elmslack?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Maybe returning from Eaves Wood, or midway across Elmslack, the engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than restarting it to check. Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M6, under 5 miles from Elmslack, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Elmslack to the car park by Silverdale Methodist Church is one matter; driving towards Lancaster, under 10 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the cleaning where the car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. Lasting damage is very unusual if it is caught soon.

Elmslack: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest in Elmslack — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by St John — the van comes to your vehicle. Which fluid got in, about how much, and if your engine has been run: we check first, because those shape the work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not wash out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to prime the system on fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking space at Silverdale or a driveway around Elmslack, that is where our engineers start the car and you set off. Before we go, our engineers check it's running smoothly with new diesel in. Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Elmslack: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight space behind Pepper Pot.

What got in, what quantity, and whether it ran: each Elmslack call opens with precisely that, before any quote, never afterwards. Given those replies, the range shrinks to one firm figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
