AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Elton? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts till your motor pulls it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Elton, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has run. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Elton: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So nobody can turn your ignition on, take the keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will see.
  • Give us a postcode starting BL8 2, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Moving the car just a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition goes on, so keep the car off.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's pointless.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance along Lonsdale Street.
  • Draining the tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

The staff working at any Elton filling station — the Esso among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Woodhill last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it's removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle sitting around Elton. Just inside your tank, it stays stable. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the EG On the Move. No damage is done as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the car is in Woodhill Fold or the centre of Elton, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever in Greater Manchester your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Elton

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Primary School, Bury the top-up is hurried. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Peers Street. Else, in dim light outside The Wellington, the vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Keep it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Elton or the remainder of Greater Manchester you are.

Elton: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Whitehead Park or halfway across Elton. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M66, under 3 miles from Elton, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Elton to the car park by St Stephen is one matter; heading for Salford, under 10 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it is caught quickly.

Elton: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest in Elton — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside Baden-Powell Hall — the van travels to your car. The work depends on three answers, which our technicians ask for first — what was put in, the amount, and if your motor has turned over.

Then your tank is emptied where the car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue will not flush out by itself. Testing the vehicle comes at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where the engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the system is primed with clean diesel. Whether it's a parking bay by Hall i' th' Wood or a drive around Elton, that is where we start the car and you head off. It's tested on fresh diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians go. Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

Anywhere the car stands — your drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — our technicians drain it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Elton, a residential suburb, well.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Elton

There's no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same. What shifts the price is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Elton Cricket Club.

Ahead of any quote, never after, every call from Elton opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if it ran. Their replies narrow a range right down to a single figure.

Our quote is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
