Embsay: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Leave your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Embsay. The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.
AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank
Many newer diesels in Greatwood, like those in Embsay, carry on two liquids; your motor gets only the diesel. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.
Each tank has its own filler. Many of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. It is in that gap that the slip lives.
Embsay: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
On a drive off Elm Tree Square before work, or in the car park at Elm Tree Inn on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.
Unfamiliar vehicles are next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.
A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Embsay or out in Eastby.
The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart
A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Mill Fields or a forecourt in Embsay.
- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.
- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Skipton.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around North Yorkshire — a routine to follow.
- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Pasture Road.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.
- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through its own spout.
- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.
Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Never carry on to step five.
Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Embsay already?
Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.
The attendants at Peter Watson Skipton Ltd, Barge Fuel Station or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear when you ask. On your own drive around Embsay? Then the vehicle stays where it is.
Where the motor has run by now, stop safely and switch the vehicle off. On the M65, under 15 miles from Embsay, that means the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Embsay.
Embsay: what occurs when our engineers turn up
Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside Embsay Church of England Primary School, near Embsay with Eastby Village Institute or at home, our van comes to it. Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the answers set both work and quote. You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.
The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is drained. More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of it clears away unaided, no matter how long it is left. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.
Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

Embsay and North Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area
As a village, Embsay has the same vans as nearby places — Spring Gardens, Middle Town — right across BD postcodes and the surrounding area beyond. Quote a postcode beginning BD23 6, and the van gets there fastest.
There's no need to shift the car. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Embsay Playground, a side street close to Embsay Methodist Church: our technicians drain the vehicle where it is. Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Primrose Mill.
