Energlyn: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The trouble begins once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. In Energlyn, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Energlyn: the first few minutes
Things to do:
- So nobody can turn the ignition on, take the keys away.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
- Which product, and about what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will know.
- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting CF83 2, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.
Never:
- Not even briefly, and not to shift your vehicle: the motor stays off.
- Turning your key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
- Even a short way up Energlyn Crescent is too far to drive it.
- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.
The staff on duty at any Energlyn filling station — the Texaco included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there
Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.
Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. It drops, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle filled in Glenfield Estate yesterday and not switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody touches the key.
After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; and, since it eats at some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Energlyn makes things worse. In the tank alone, time does nothing. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol
A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Asda. Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; running the engine is the harm.
AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Whether the vehicle is in Pwllypant or the centre of Energlyn, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not stay blended, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following tankful.
The same good news applies as with petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Caerphilly the car is standing.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Energlyn?
No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.
A few familiar ways account for most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway close to Y Felin Ffrwd. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Masons Arms, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.
Rented cars, brand-new motors, company cars, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least known cars get it most. Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, wherever around Energlyn or the rest of Caerphilly you happen to be.
AdBlue in your diesel tank in Energlyn, and the engine started?
The AdBlue has left the tank, then. It's been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.
You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Aneurin Park or halfway across Energlyn. No restarting to check: stop when safe, then turn everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.
Energlyn lies under 5 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.
How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Energlyn to the car park by St Andrew's Church is a very different job from a run towards Cardiff, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's noticed soon.
Energlyn: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel
We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Energlyn: a side street near Caerphilly Children's Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid was put in, about how much, plus if your engine has been run: our engineers check before all else, since those shape the work.
The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is emptied, right there. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of the vehicle. Not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.
Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end. You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Energlyn or in a bay outside Energlyn & Churchill Park. Our engineers check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Energlyn
Every job is different, and so no fixed quote would be honest. What shifts the cost is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Trecenydd Community Centre.
What got in, what quantity, plus whether the engine ran: each Energlyn enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, not after. Their replies shrink the range right down to one number.
Before anyone heads out, you are told the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
