How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Erdington
AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, done just where the vehicle sits around Erdington, is usually what it needs when caught before your engine runs. Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle
Diesel feeds your motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Erdington and Gravelly Hill hold a second fluid too. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.
Each tank has its own filler. Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly. It's in that gap that the slip lives.
Erdington: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place
Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.
To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Orchard Road, or outside HQ Bar on the way home after work.
Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.
Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Chester Road or the middle of Erdington: it takes the same few seconds either way.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Short Heath or a forecourt around Erdington.
- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says which it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at the nearest station? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
For the day the warning appears — wherever you are around West Midlands — a routine to follow.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Holly Lane.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.
- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.
- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Stage five is out.
Erdington: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Do not start the engine: that is how the short order of things starts. Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.
At a forecourt — Esso, another forecourt nearby or any other — the attendants will usually help push the car away, if you ask. If you are on your own driveway around Erdington, leave the car where it sits.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. Erdington lies under 3 miles from the M6; on it, use the next exit. Distance counts — a short hop across Erdington is a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Birmingham — so say about how far it went.
When our engineers arrive in Erdington, what happens?
Our van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Erdington United Reformed Church, or by Abbey Catholic Primary School. The replies settle this work and the price, so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run. You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.
Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it matters more. A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running properly.
Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after we are there. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
