Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Eskhill: Why It Occurs
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. Around Eskhill, finding it before the motor runs usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot. Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers why it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle
Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of current diesels driven round Eskhill and Eastfield carry a second fluid as well. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.
Each tank has a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap to use. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Eskhill
Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.
On a driveway off Woodside Drive before work, or in the car park outside The Roadhouse on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.
Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.
A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on. It takes a few seconds, be it out in Loanburn or right in the heart of Eskhill.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
Look at these first, on a forecourt in Eskhill or a drive over in Ladywood. Seconds, that's all.
- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Curriehill? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
The day the light goes on, wherever across Midlothian, follow this routine.
- Not in a rush on the side of Dick Terrace, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.
- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.
- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.
Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Step five is off limits.
Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Eskhill?
The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.
Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Tesco, the Asda or anywhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Eskhill.
Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. Eskhill lies under 10 miles from the M8; there, use the first junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Edinburgh, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Eskhill.
Eskhill: what takes place when we arrive
By the local primary school, near Kirkhill Bowling Club or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it. Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, because those answers settle this work and our quote. Nobody heads out before you have heard the quote over the phone.
Then that tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we go.
If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

AdBlue drains in Eskhill and across Midlothian
Being a residential suburb, Eskhill has the same vans as nearby areas — Penicuik, Kirkhill — right across EH postcodes and the wider area beyond. Give a postcode beginning EH26 8, and the van arrives quickest.
Moving the vehicle is not necessary. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Penicuik Cricket Club, a side street near Penicuik North Kirk: our engineers drain the vehicle where it is. Guessing won't help behind St. Mungo's Church Hall, close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe; ring and check.
In short, for Eskhill people
Read the cap before you pour. Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Midlothian, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
