AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Exley Head: How It Occurs and How to Stop It
Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103. Usually, if your engine hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car is in Exley Head. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?
Plenty of modern diesels in Ingrow, as well as Exley Head, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Different tanks, separate fillers. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in that gap between them.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around Exley Head: how it occurs
Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.
To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Nessfield Road, perhaps at The Three Horses on the way home after work.
Unfamiliar vehicles are next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.
Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing halts it. It's seconds, be it out in Fell Lane or right in the centre of Exley Head.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Exley Head or a drive out in Bracken Bank. Seconds, that's all.
- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show what belongs in each filler right there.
- Can't see it next to the diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Keighley.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
Wherever around West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.
- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Weston Street.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Don't go on to step five.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Exley Head?
Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things begins. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off. Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.
On a forecourt — Shell, another forecourt nearby or any other — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Exley Head.
If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. On the M606, under 10 miles from Exley Head, that means the next exit. Distance matters — a quick hop across Exley Head is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Bradford — so tell us roughly how far it went.
Exley Head: what takes place when we turn up
Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Beckfoot Nessfield, near Exley Head Methodist Church or on your own driveway. Those replies determine this work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run. On the call itself, you are told our quote — before anything else.
Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car. We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.
With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers are there. The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
