Fairweather Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven around Fairweather Green and Birks carry another liquid as well. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Many of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Fairweather Green

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Thornton Old Road before work, or in the car park outside Red Lion heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it. Crossley Hall or the heart of Fairweather Green: it is the same few seconds in both.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Lower Grange or a forecourt around Fairweather Green, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Can't see it beside your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Bradford Forster Square's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Shuttleworth Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Step five is out.

Fairweather Green: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: the engine remains off. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Asda, Morrisons or another — the staff will normally help roll your car clear, if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Fairweather Green.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. On the M606, under 3 miles from Fairweather Green, that means the next junction. A short hop across Fairweather Green is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

When our engineers get there around Fairweather Green, what occurs?

By Crossley Hall Primary School, near St Saviour or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it. Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the replies settle this work and our price. The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is drained. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more. After the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested. Before we go, our technicians start it and make sure that it's running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
