AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Farnsfield? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your motor off then leave your ignition off. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system draws it in. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Farnsfield. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Farnsfield: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pull the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting NG22 8, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Don't:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift your car: your motor stays off.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.
  • Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Main Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Moving your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Farnsfield forecourt you're on, the Brookside Garage included. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It does not blend. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Bilsthorpe Moor overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be first through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out. A motor left sitting in Farnsfield with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Farnsfield

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the JET, and the problem is diluted fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside your tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Belle Eau Park or the heart of Farnsfield equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside your tank, the easiest section of the whole system to clear, anywhere the vehicle has stopped across Nottinghamshire.

Farnsfield: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Farnsfield St Michael's Church of England Primary School. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Eaton Close. Otherwise, after dark outside The Plough, the car gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the spare car in a home with one of each fuels. Same mistake, same first step — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be around Farnsfield or the rest of Nottinghamshire.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Farnsfield, and your engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Through your filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may show up, perhaps part way across Farnsfield or returning from Wilson's Field. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Farnsfield sits under 10 miles from the M1; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Farnsfield to park near Farnsfield Methodist Church and a drive of under 15 miles towards Nottingham are very different jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been run. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it's spotted early.

Farnsfield: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street beside Farnsfield Village Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Farnsfield, our technicians come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether your motor has run, because those answers settle the work.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of the car comes last, after clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, where necessary, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Bleasby or on a drive in Farnsfield. It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we leave. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Farnsfield: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so no single quote would be fair. What moves the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Farnsfield Library.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Farnsfield opens with the same trio — which fluid got in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of any figure. Once they are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Look at your policy while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
