Felsted: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. The trouble starts once it's pulled through the pump — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel. In Felsted, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Felsted: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pull the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it away.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CM6 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the motor remains off.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't thin it.
  • Even a short way up Chelmsford Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Emptying the tank yourself by the road isn't one to try.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Felsted forecourt you're on, the Gulf or any other. On the drive, the car stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the gases. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Bannister Green last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; and, because it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Overnight, a car parked in Felsted with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just inside that tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Felsted

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco. Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether your car is in Cock Green or the centre of Felsted, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Essex the vehicle is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Felsted

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs invite it. A bottle bought when driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside The Flitch Green Academy, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills the car. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Braintree Road. Else, in dim light by The Swan Inn, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the spare motor in a family with both fuels. Keep it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere in Felsted or the rest of Essex you are.

Felsted: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. It has been drawn through your filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps coming back from Flitch Way Country Park, or midway across Felsted, your motor may run rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or cut out. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave it off rather than testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M11, under 10 miles from Felsted, by the first junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Felsted to park near Holy Cross and a drive of under 10 miles towards Chelmsford are such separate jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been running. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

Felsted: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that is a road near Felsted School Chapel, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Felsted, and our van travels to it. What got in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run: our engineers check first, because those shape the job.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one. Residue from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Finally, the system is primed with clean diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Felsted or in a bay by Braintree. Our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

Felsted and Essex: AdBlue drains across the area

Anywhere the vehicle stands — a driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our technicians drain it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Felsted, a village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Felsted?

No flat price would be honest, since each job is different. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Community Hall.

With that in mind, each call from Felsted opens with the same trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — before a quote. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before a van sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Felsted: still beside the vehicle?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle. Ignition off, motor off, keys out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Felsted or anywhere in Essex.
