AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ferryside: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the vehicle sits in Ferryside, is normally what it takes if caught before the engine runs. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds your motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around Ferryside and Broadway carry a second fluid too. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. Many of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. It is in that gap that the slip happens.

Ferryside: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Water Street before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on. Broadlay or the heart of Ferryside: it is the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Llansaint or a forecourt in Ferryside, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.
  • The handbook shows where it lives if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever across Carmarthenshire, use this routine.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Eva Terrace, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Don't carry on to step five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ferryside already?

Don't start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins. Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Murco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. At home in Ferryside? Then the vehicle remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. Ferryside lies under 15 miles from the M4; on it, use the next exit. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Swansea, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Ferryside.

Ferryside: what occurs when our engineers turn up

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, near Calon Glan-y-ferri, Ferryside Community Centre or on your own driveway. What fluid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those replies set the work and quote. No one sets off until you've heard the price over the phone.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it is left. Once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested. After that our engineers start the car and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle does not need to move. The drain takes place on the spot, be it a driveway, a street by Castell Llansteffan, or a layby towards Ferry Farm Wood. If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Bethany Baptist Chapel, ring and ask rather than assuming.
