Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Firgrove
AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. In Firgrove, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot. The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Many newer diesels around Newbold Brow, as well as Firgrove, run on two fluids; the motor takes only the diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Each tank has one filler of its own. Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side under one flap. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Firgrove
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Willows Lane, or heading home in the car park at Crown and Shuttle.
New-to-you cars come next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.
A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on. Whether it takes place in Newbold or the middle of Firgrove, it's the same few seconds.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Be it a Firgrove forecourt or a driveway out in Lady House, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.
- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.
- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Lift the flap and look for a label — many motors mark what belongs in which filler right there.
- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Rochdale.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank
When the light comes on, wherever in Greater Manchester, use this routine.
- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Heatley Road.
- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
- Shut the cap, then look once more — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the car.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Leave out step five entirely.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Firgrove?
Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. Keep the ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs the pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.
The staff at Morrisons, Esso or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Firgrove.
If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. On the M62, under a mile from Firgrove, that means the next junction. Mileage counts — a quick hop across Firgrove is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Manchester — so say about how far it went.
What occurs when we get there in Firgrove
Outside Moorhouse Academy, close to St Ann or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so we ask. Nobody sets off before you've heard our price by phone.
Then that tank is drained and your system cleaned thoroughly. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes out on its own, no matter how long it sits. Once the filter has been flushed — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested. Before we go, we fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.
Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
