Flamborough: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Usually, if your engine has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Flamborough. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's how many modern diesels near Flamborough and Marton carry, with diesel for your engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has one filler of its own. Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap. Diesel gets filled on each forecourt call-out, again and again. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly. That gap is where the mistake lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Flamborough: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Chapel Street before work, or in the car park at The Victoria Club on the way home.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The Crofts or the heart of Flamborough: it is the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Sewerby or a forecourt around Flamborough, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
  • Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Bempton's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere across East Riding of Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush by B1255 on the verge.
  • Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read the cap.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly through its built-in spout.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there. Do not go on to step five.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Flamborough?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Tesco or any other — the staff will usually help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Flamborough.

Already run? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off. On the M62, under 50 miles from Flamborough, that means the next junction. A short hop across Flamborough is a smaller job than a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 50 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

When our technicians turn up around Flamborough, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Flamborough CofE (VC) Primary School, near Flamborough Village Hall or on your own driveway. What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and quote. You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more. Filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of your vehicle. Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we are there. Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
