Forest Park: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when your pump starts drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Forest Park, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your engine has run. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Forest Park, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, pull the keys away.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a RG12 0 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is wasted.
  • Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Farningham.
  • Emptying the tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Forest Park forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. On the drive, your car stays exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. Nothing in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

It does not blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Birch Hill last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, untouched — though it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out. Lines holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Forest Park. Only in the tank, it stays the same. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole problem. Blended through your diesel and left unused, it's harmless for now; using your motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Martins Heron or the middle of Forest Park.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever the car has stopped across Berkshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Forest Park: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. It usually occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Crown Wood Primary School. Close to Savernake Way, someone pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Woodcutters, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere across Berkshire, Forest Park included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

Forest Park: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, maybe part way across Forest Park or coming back from Farningham Ride. Once you safely can, pull over then turn it off — with no restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the A329(M), under 3 miles from Forest Park, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Forest Park to the car park by Forest Park Community Centre is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after your engine has been started. When it is spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Forest Park: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in Forest Park — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road beside Bracknell Swimarium — our van comes to your vehicle. What went in, roughly the quantity, and whether the motor has been run: our engineers check first, because those decide the work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own. A test of your vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if the engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end. Then our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space at Martins Heron or a drive around Forest Park. Before we leave, we confirm it is running properly with new diesel in. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Forest Park and Berkshire

AdBlue call-outs in Forest Park go to vans that serve the places near it — Crown Wood, Harmans Water as well as The Warren — and most of Berkshire further out, throughout RG postcodes. Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking beats guessing, so phone.

A mobile service fits Forest Park, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring the car to us, since we drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Forest Park?

Each job is different, so not one fixed price would be fair. Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Harman's Water Library.

That is why every call from Forest Park starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run. When they are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your policy while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

Forest Park: still next to the vehicle?

Then, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it. Ignition off, engine off, keys out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Forest Park or anywhere around Berkshire.
