Foxbar: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Usually, when your motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car is around Foxbar. Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank
Many current diesels on the roads about Foxbar and Lounsdale carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.
There is a filler for every tank. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It's in the gap that the mistake lives.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around Foxbar: how it takes place
It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Oliphant Crescent, perhaps at the pub in the village on the way home that evening.
Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started. Brediland or the middle of Foxbar: it takes the same few seconds either way.
The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart
Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Meikleriggs or a forecourt in Foxbar, check these. They take a few seconds.
- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.
- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Johnstone.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
When the light goes on, anywhere across Renfrewshire, follow this routine.
- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Montrose Road.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.
- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Before starting your car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.
Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there. Skip step five altogether.
Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Foxbar already?
Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.
On a forecourt — JET, Esso or another — the staff will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask. Your own driveway in Foxbar is where it stays.
Already run? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off. Come off the M8 — under 3 miles out of Foxbar — at the next junction. A short hop across Foxbar is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.
Our arrival in Foxbar, and what occurs next
Outside the local primary school, near Foxbar Library or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the answers settle the work and our quote. On the call itself, you are told the price — before anything else.
The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is emptied. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. After that our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.
With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after we are there. Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
