AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Frampton End: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103. In Frampton End, catching it before the engine turns normally means a drain and a full flush on the spot. Here before the event? Then what follows explains how it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around North Corner, as well as Frampton End, run on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly. That gap is where the slip lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Frampton End: how it happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Frampton End Road before work, or in the car park outside The Rising Sun on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Frampton End or out in Frampton Cotterell.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Watleys End or a forecourt around Frampton End.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Yate? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — wherever you are across Gloucestershire — a simple routine to use.

  • Turn off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush by Church Road at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Do not go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Frampton End already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — BP, Esso or another — the staff will normally help push the vehicle away, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Frampton End.

Where your engine has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off. On the M4, under 3 miles from Frampton End, that means the next exit. About how far did it go? Crossing Frampton End is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Bristol, so tell us.

Frampton End: what happens when our technicians get there

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Watermore Primary School, near Brockeridge Centre or on your own drive. The answers settle this work and our quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run. That quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears away unaided, no matter how long it is left. The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of your vehicle. Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take roughly half an hour after our technicians are there. The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
