Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Frenchwood

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens until the engine sucks it round. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Frenchwood. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Frenchwood

To do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and about what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting PR1 4, or simply the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the motor stays off.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep it off.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short way down Manchester Road.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Frenchwood forecourt you're on, the Texaco included. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what your engine emits. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — entirely different from fuel. It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Walton-le-Dale last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it will be first through if the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there. By daybreak, a car parked around Frenchwood with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is only inside that tank, it doesn't. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Frenchwood

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole issue. Blended through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using your motor does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether your vehicle sits in Deepdale or the heart of Frenchwood, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has come to rest in Lancashire.

Frenchwood: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. Usually it is not the forecourt: a driver buys a container driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Frenchwood Community Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the car. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Frenchwood Avenue. Otherwise, after dark outside Ye Olde Blue Bell, your vehicle gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired motors, brand-new cars, company vehicles, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least known cars get it the most. Wherever you're around Frenchwood or the rest of Lancashire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

Frenchwood: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Given any running, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through the filter and lines.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Fishwick Recreation Ground or halfway across Frenchwood. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the Preston Bypass, under 3 miles from Frenchwood, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so driving for Preston, under a mile away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Frenchwood to the car park by Frenchwood Social Club. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Long-term damage is very unusual if it's caught soon.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Frenchwood: what it takes

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Frenchwood: a side street close to Jamea Masjid, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job depends on three answers, and our technicians get before all else — what went in, the quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

Next, draining the tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. What remains from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol. Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step. You set off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Frenchwood or in a space by Preston. The test before our technicians go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains around Frenchwood and across Lancashire

Over the PR postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue call-outs in Frenchwood serve most of Lancashire as well, Avenham, Preston and Fishwick among them. Phone and ask instead of guessing when you're by a county line, or somewhere awkward to explain.

Frenchwood is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Frenchwood

There is no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Helix 20.

Before any quote, never after, every enquiry from Frenchwood begins with three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus whether the engine ran. Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
