Fulshaw Park: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103. Around Fulshaw Park, finding it before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank
Plenty of newer diesels in Pownall Park, as well as Fulshaw Park, run on two liquids; the engine gets only your diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
There is a filler on every tank. Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side behind one flap. Diesel gets filled on each forecourt call-out, again and again. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Fulshaw Park
Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Beechway before work, or in the car park outside King's Arms on the way home.
The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: a new car.
No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Fulshaw Park or out in Davenport Green.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
Whether a Fulshaw Park forecourt or a drive out in Row-of-trees, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Wilmslow, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Cheshire that is.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Nursery Lane.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.
- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.
Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Don't carry on to stage five.
AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Fulshaw Park?
What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.
The staff at Asda Express, BP or any forecourt will usually help to push the car clear when asked. At home in Fulshaw Park? Then your car remains where it is.
Where your engine has been run already, stop safely then turn it off. Come off the M56 — under 5 miles out of Fulshaw Park — at the next junction. A short hop across Fulshaw Park is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
What takes place when we turn up around Fulshaw Park
Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether by St Anne's Fulshaw C of E Primary School, near Wilmslow Bowling Club or at home, the van comes to it. Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it has run — so we ask. Nobody sets off until you have had our quote over the phone.
Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away unaided. Hence it matters more. A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary. We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.
If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
