Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gaer
If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Gaer. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.
Gaer, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once
Do these:
- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.
- Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
- Give us a postcode starting NP20 3, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.
Not to do:
- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.
- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way along Dickens Drive.
- Beside the road, do not try emptying it yourself.
Moving the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Gaer forecourt you are on, the Tesco included. On the drive, your car stays exactly as it is.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.
Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — quite different from fuel. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. A motor topped up on a driveway in Caerau Park overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once your engine runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.
From there it causes two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; and, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Gaer. Just in your tank, it stays stable. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse
A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Newport City Truck Stop. No damage comes while it stays unused, blended into your diesel — only when your motor runs on it.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Stow Park or the middle of Gaer.
The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Newport the vehicle is standing.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gaer: how it ends up there
It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.
The ways it takes place are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school. Close to Masefield Vale, someone pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Gaer Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.
The least familiar cars see it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare motor of a home with one of each fuel types. Anywhere across Newport, Gaer as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.
Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Gaer?
In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.
Maybe returning from Gaer Fort, or part way across Gaer, your motor might run rough, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or stall. No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then turn everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.
On the M4, under a mile from Gaer, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.
How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Gaer to the car park by Gaer Community Centre is a very different job from a run towards Newport, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.
Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been running. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it is noticed soon.
Gaer: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel
A street beside St Martin-in-the-Gaer, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the car has come to rest around Gaer, our technicians travel to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if your engine has run, because those replies settle the work.
Next, emptying your tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol. Testing your car comes last, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.
Last, your system is bled with fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking bay outside Pye Corner or a driveway around Gaer, that is where our engineers start it and you head off. Before leaving, our technicians check it is running correctly with new diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Gaer
Because the callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest. Three things change the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Gaer Road Men's Shed.
For that reason, every enquiry from Gaer opens by asking the same trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of any quote. Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.
Our price is given during the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
