Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels around Garden Village and Ifton Heath carry, with diesel for the engine. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler. Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together behind one flap. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Garden Village: how it happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Garden Village, or heading home in the car park at Cross Keys Inn.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Garden Village or out in St Martins.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, on a forecourt in Garden Village or a driveway over in Moors Bank. A few seconds, that's all.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark what goes in which filler just there.
  • The handbook says where it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — from Gobowen's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is across Shropshire — a simple routine to use.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Greenfields.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
  • Both under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — confirm your diesel cap remained shut throughout. Only then, start the car.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop. Don't go on to stage five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Garden Village?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Texaco, BP or any forecourt will usually help pushing your car clear when you ask. If you are on your own drive in Garden Village, leave the car where it stands.

Garden Village: what occurs when we get there

Our van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Martins Community Centre, or by Weston Rhyn Primary School. Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because the replies determine the work and our price. No one sets off before you've heard our quote by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive. No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
