Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Garlands

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's pulled through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Garlands. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Garlands

To do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting CA1 3, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short way up Axson Drive is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Garlands forecourt you are on, the BP included. If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it stands.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It doesn't blend. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. A motor topped up on a driveway in Scotby overnight and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once your engine runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches until it is cleared from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels. A motor left sitting in Garlands with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Garlands

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Shell, and the issue is diluted fuel. Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether the vehicle is in Brisco or the heart of Garlands, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only in your tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere your car has come to rest across Cumbria.

Garlands: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; many designs invite it. It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Pennine Way Primary School. Near Woodrow Drive, a driver pours a container in on that drive in the evening. Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by Green Bank.

It crops up the most in a rental, a new car, a company motor, or the spare motor of a family with one of each fuels — the vehicles drivers use least. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same slip, wherever in Garlands or the rest of Cumbria you are.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Garlands?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Snake Wood or halfway across Garlands. No starting it again to check: pull over once safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M6, under a mile from Garlands, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

A quick hop across Garlands to the car park by Harraby Theatre is one matter; heading for Carlisle, under 3 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's noticed quickly.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Garlands

The car stays put, whether that's a street near Harraby Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Garlands, and the van comes to it. Three replies decide the job, so first we ask what went in, roughly the amount, plus whether your engine has turned over.

Then your tank is drained where your car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at Wetheral or on a driveway in Garlands. It's checked on new diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians head off. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue drains across Garlands and Cumbria

Carleton, Harraby and Cumwhinton are among the places near Garlands that the same vans reach, together with much of Cumbria beyond, throughout the CA postcode area. Assuming won't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

No towing is needed. In Garlands, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is drained where it stands, be it on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Garlands?

Because each callouts vary, a flat price would not be honest. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Harraby Campus Sports.

For that in mind, each enquiry from Garlands begins with the identical trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of a quote. Those replies shrink the range right down to one number.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
