AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Garrison Side? Don't Start It
If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The harm begins once it's sucked through your pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel. In Garrison Side, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.
Garrison Side, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away
To do:
- Pocket the keys, which prevents anyone turning the electrics on.
- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
- Which product, and roughly what amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we will see.
- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting HU9 1, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.
Don't do these:
- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the engine remains off.
- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Plimsoll Way.
- By the road, don't try draining it yourself.
Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Garrison Side forecourt you are on, the Tesco or any other. On the drive, the vehicle remains exactly where it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.
Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Trinity Court yesterday and never switched on stays the simple case, as long as nobody touches your key.
It does two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning around Garrison Side makes it worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.
Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?
A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the BP. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in that tank, it does nothing.
AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Lisle Court or the centre of Garrison Side equally.
With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in East Riding of Yorkshire your car sits.
Garrison Side: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank
It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. A container picked up while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.
Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside Victoria Dock Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Ha'penny Bridge Way. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Three Crowns, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.
Hired cars, brand-new vehicles, fleet motors, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars see it most. An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Garrison Side or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire.
Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Garrison Side?
Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.
Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Victoria Park, say, or midway across Garrison Side. No starting it again to test: stop once it is safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of it through.
Leave the M180, under 15 miles from Garrison Side, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.
Hopping across Garrison Side to the car park by Hull Castle is one thing; heading towards Kingston upon Hull, under a mile away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.
Once your engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is noticed quickly.
What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Garrison Side
The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near The Village Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Garrison Side, and our van comes to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run, because those replies determine this work.
Then the tank is drained where your car stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol. A test of the car follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, if needed, replaced. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, provided the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.
Priming the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Garrison Side or in a bay by Hull. It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we go. No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

Garrison Side: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix
There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Hull Streetlife Museum.
What was put in, how much, and if the engine ran: each Garrison Side call begins with precisely that, ahead of a figure, not afterwards. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.
You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
